Transforming Talent: EMS ISD’s Special Effects Makeup Camp Sparks Creativity in Young Artists
From accelerating the aging process to some gnarly looking scars, a unique summer enrichment camp in EMS ISD is teaching students how create realistic looking special effects using makeup.
The Special Effects Makeup Camp includes students from middle schools and high schools across the district. During the camp, students learn a variety of skills, from common actor knowledge to special effects makeup for creating old age, scars, burns and cuts.
On the last day of camp, students produced their own story and used all the skills they learned during the camp.
Jason Walker, the choir and theater director at Creekview Middle School who leads the camps, said, "My favorite day of the camp is the nose and scar wax day. I love to teach that.”
As you can imagine, the camp is highly engaging. The favorite day for the attendees is when they go in public with their special effects makeup on, and watch the reactions of the people who see them. Then, they're able to share more with the community about the camp and EMS ISD.
“I wanted to do this camp because in eighth grade I was so interested in seeing all the cool stage makeup in theater class. My favorite day was learning how to use the scar wax and create cool effects. It was really fun,” said Valen Gutierrez, a Boswell High School sophomore.
Walker enjoys seeing students have fun while continuing to learn over the summer.
“I have always loved special effects makeup and how it can completely transform someone into a moving character,” Walker said. “This camp allows me to teach basic techniques and introduce materials to inspire the next generation of artists.”
